Founded in 2012, The 2 Cents Movement has consistently showcased its dedication to youth empowerment, artistic expression, and social engagement. Through their innovative programming, they have positively impacted the lives of numerous young people, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and self-expression. The 2 Cents Movement is well poised to execute a youth spoken word festival. The 2 Cents Movement has a rich history of promoting spoken word poetry, empowering young voices, and engaging with diverse partners and stakeholders. Over the years, the organization has achieved significant milestones and impacted the spoken word poetry landscape in Trinidad and Tobago.

Here are some key highlights:

November 17th, 2012: The 2 Cents Movement marked a significant moment with the inception of VERSES 2012, one of the largest slams in the Caribbean. This event, which later transitioned into The First Citizens National Poetry Slam, became a flagship platform for poets to showcase their talent and compete. The organization founded and organized this event until 2019, fostering the country’s spoken word poetry growth.

June 12th, 2013: The 2 Cents Movement achieved a milestone by performing for its largest audience, delivering spoken word poetry to a mass student body at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA). This event marked a breakthrough in bringing spoken word poetry to a wider audience and inspiring young individuals through the power of words.

November 4th, 2013: The organization embarked on its first Secondary School Tour, starting with a visit to Bon Air Secondary School. This marked the beginning of numerous school tours, where The 2 Cents Movement introduced spoken word poetry to secondary schools across Trinidad and Tobago, inspiring and engaging students with the art form.

2013-2014: The 2 Cents for Change project emerged as a groundbreaking initiative, utilizing social media platforms to share spoken word poetry videos on YouTube. These videos garnered hundreds of thousands of views, spreading the impact and reach of spoken-word poetry nationwide.

March 2016: The organization expanded its reach by initiating engagements with primary schools as part of the Republic Bank Inspire Tour. Over 15 primary schools in Trinidad benefitted from The 2 Cents Movement’s first set of visits, inspiring young students to explore their creative potential through spoken word poetry. Additionally, these visits led to workshops and showcases for primary school students. This continued until 2019.

Raise The Bar (RTB): In 2014, Raise The Bar became the official name for the Secondary Schools National Poetry Festival. This competition, which originated following the success of The 2 Cents Movement Secondary School Tour, has become a prominent platform for young poets to showcase their skills and compete nationally.

June 2017: The 2 Cents Movement embarked on an impactful tour in the United Kingdom, performing at schools in London, festivals in Birmingham and Stratford on the Ave. This tour provided an international platform for the organization’s poets, expanding their reach and fostering cultural exchange.

January 2020: The group embarked on a Regional School Tour sponsored by the British High Commission. The tour included performances at schools in Belize, Jamaica, St. Lucia, and Barbados, further expanding the organization’s influence beyond Trinidad and Tobago.

2020-2023: The 2 Cents Movement collaborated with the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) to address migration issues in Trinidad, specifically focusing on the Venezuelan migrant crisis. This collaboration, known as the Borders of Hope campaign, utilized spoken word poetry to raise awareness and foster empathy.

Throughout its journey, The 2 Cents Movement has cultivated strong partnerships and received support from a range of sponsors and organizations, including the US Embassy, British High Commission, TEDx, MindWise TT, Eastern Credit Union, Republic Bank, Bocas Lit Fest, Young Chicago Authors, Frenetic Arts (Barbados, YATA (Belize), Girls of a Feather (St. Lucia), and many more. These collaborations have enabled the organization to amplify its impact and reach wider audiences.

With each milestone achieved, The 2 Cents Movement has continuously elevated the spoken word poetry scene, empowered youth voices, and inspired individuals to use their words as a catalyst for change. The 2 Cents Movement also received two national youth awards for outstanding programming. These awards affirmed the impact and significance of their initiatives in empowering and inspiring the youth of Trinidad and Tobago. Through their dedication, creativity, and collaboration with diverse partners, The 2 Cents Movement has left an indelible mark on the artistic landscape of Trinidad and Tobago.
